- Abstract:
- Clear understanding of ideals can bring about meaningful discussion about elder education. However, there are various arguments about ideals of such education. Functionalism ideals helped the establishment of elder education, while linking inequality and discrimination. Critical educational gerontology (CEG) regards elder education as a part of social transformation, advocating changing the lifelong inequality through empowerment and emancipation. Humanism ideals oppose the politicisation of education and advocates that, like other forms of education, elder education needs to serve people’s self-development. For the current discussion, humanism ideals of catering to freedom and autonomy needs occupy the mainstream position, while the CEG ideals are restricted by their limited operability and functionalism ideals are unable to reflect the priority of human development. A ‘new’ kind of humanism ideal focusing on the special introverted development of the elderly is becoming a new hotspot.
