Abstract:
The aging population structure is about to become the new normal of human society. Data from China’s seventh census indicates that China’s population aged 60 and above accounted for 18.7% of the total population, with those aged 65 and above accounting for 13.5%. In retrospect, the development process of China’s education for the elderly has experienced a start-up period, a promotion period, a development period, and a prosperous period. Against a backdrop of reform and opening-up, the last 40 years of China’s education for the elderly have demonstrated an unprecedented trend of vigorous development. These accomplishments include establishing a people-oriented development concept, promoting a government-led operating mechanism, the formation of an experiment-first promotion strategy, and a diversified school-administration model, apart from a good momentum in theoretical research. However, China’s development of education for the elderly also faces many challenges. Uneven development and insufficient supply of education for the elderly are significant issues, apart from a difficulty for education for the elderly to cope with the differentiated development of aging including an unsound legal structure and management system for education for the elderly. Future development of education for the elderly in China may necessitate the development of education for the elderly in the lifelong education system, improving the supply of education for the elderly by changing concepts, methods, content and mechanisms, and further using information technology to support education for the elderly. Additionally, developing education for the elderly in the context of the elderly care service industry, a focus on rural and disadvantaged groups, implementing various guarantee conditions for education for the elderly, and creating a good external environment are other challenges.
